Is It Plagiarism If You Use An Existing Topic For Extended Essay
Is It Plagiarism If You Use An Existing Topic For Extended Essay? The first question that many students ask is, 'Is it plagiarism if you use an existing topic for the extended essay?' In this article, we will address the issue of whether a course-book or an essay from another source is considered plagiarism. We will look at the four categories that may determine if you have infringed on another's work. Please note, that this article is written for English Language Instruction (ELI) teachers.Subject: The subject of the essay is generally of greatest importance to teachers. Students are not familiar with the subject matter of the content, so it is important to note that the topics that are used in essay discussions have to be relevant. This is often determined by the subject area of the book. However, the student does not need to feel obligated to refer back to the original text as a reference source. Is it plagiarism if you use an existing topic for the extended essay? In this day and a ge, students do not necessarily need to refer back to the original text. The use of a question in the middle of the text can serve as a link back to the original material, while providing students with a question to ask during the essay.Original material: Students should not copy content directly from any source, whether it is a book lecture, or other source. If a student uses a resource that was previously published, the teacher needs to provide an appropriate citation to verify that the textbook, lecture, or other source is the same one used in the essay. It is important to note that this is not plagiarism; rather, it is called quotation and citing as stated above.Repetition: When students write along essay, they will often find themselves using previous concepts. This is done to make the essay more cohesive. Students should be encouraged to reuse previous and/or similar ideas and do not feel obligated to duplicate the entire idea from one source. Most schools take plagiarism seri ously, and in the end this will help them make sure that they uphold high standards of academic integrity in their courses.Original text: This one seems obvious, but the truth is that sometimes students will use the original material and then incorporate changes. The original work will remain the original work, and therefore, the student has not plagiarized. However, as with the use of an existing topic for the extended essay, students should be able to verify that the source of the information is the same. The bottom line is that teachers and students alike must pay close attention to the details. Some of the major issues to pay attention to are repetition, original material, and a consistent source. The classroom worksheet can be used to help establish a consistent source of all information and this can help students avoid plagiarism. Other methods include the use of a handout that outlines the essay topic and then follows it with a revision of the book and/or lecture that may refe r back to the original text, and also the use of supplemental worksheets and even attendance cards to note the student's own materials and to verify that they are all identical in content.Knowing whether or not it is plagiarism if you use an existing topic for the extended essay is a very difficult question to answer. However, in order to avoid plagiarism, students and teachers must understand how to control the plagiarism that occurs.
